Unaddressed mental health is a growing public health crisis that is costing lives and money. Evidence shows that heightened symptoms of anxiety, stress, depression and fatigue have a major impact on employee mental health and wellbeing and ability to do their best work. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has created significant mental health challenges and driven a surge in these symptoms.
Organizational health has been directly impacted with increased absenteeism and reduced productivity as employees struggle to cope with their mental health symptoms due to a shortage of mental health professionals, lack of access to resources or existing programs deemed ineffective. For far too long, employers have struggled with investing smartly in digital mental health and wellbeing solutions that delivered real outcomes. Our approach is different, solving issues of access and outcomes with a data-driven suite of digital programs, backed by two decades of research, that can be scaled across large, diverse populations.
Based on our 2021 Employee Mental Health and Wellbeing Report, 66% of surveyed employees agree or strongly agree that their employer could be doing more to help support their mental health and wellbeing. Employers are responding accordingly, based on data from the Society of Human Resources reporting that at least 32% of employers plan to increase mental health benefits for workers in the coming year. However, more employers need to get on board to address the growing need.
How employers respond to requests for increased mental health benefits matters—78% of employees prefer online mental health services and support over in-person services.
SilverCloud® customers have reported lower costs compared to providing face-to-face therapy, with similar or better outcomes. In fact, digital mental health therapy is about 1/3 the cost of face-to-face therapy. Reliable outcomes data drives ROI and allows you to more closely predict how your employees will benefit. Engagement and outcomes data supports your organization in creating the lasting behavior changes needed to have a healthier, happier team and lower healthcare costs—for your company and your team. Data analysis have shown the potential for up to a 13% savings on the cost of medical care for patients who used SilverCloud® programs.
The data from the recent Amwell® survey underscores the significant ROI that digitally delivered, on-demand behavioral health services can provide. Based on 38% of respondents reporting missing time at work due to COVID-related stress, Amwell® estimates that the time missed by these employees is equivalent to 6.7% of all hours worked, or an average of over a half hour per day for every employee. For employers with 5,000 employees, this equates to $28 million annually in lost productivity if mental health challenges go unaddressed.
