SilverCloud Health Taps New Leads to Support 103% Growth in Digital Mental Health Platform Users

New Partnerships Expand Access to Clinically-Proven Programs, Add to Efficacy and Outcomes Data

BOSTON (May 25, 2021) SilverCloud Health, the world's leading digital mental health platform for health care systems and providers, health plans, and employers, today announces the appointments of David Sockel as Chief Commercial Officer and Patrick Flynn as Chief Operating Officer.

Each will support the expansion of global access to the over 30 clinically-proven digital mental health programs offered by SilverCloud, which over the last 16 months has expanded to serve 680,000 individuals worldwide, a 103% increase since January 2020. In the U.S., the platform has seen a 94% increase in users who have fully enrolled in on-demand programs that help them manage anxiety, depression, insomnia, diabetes, chronic pain, and wellness issues such as stress, resilience, and – new in 2020 – wellbeing during Covid-19.

More than 30 health plans, health systems, corporations and universities have signed on since January 2020 to improve access to mental health services with SilverCloud Health to reduce health costs, combat clinician burnout, improve employee wellbeing and productivity, and meet other goals.

“More and more people are coming to acknowledge that there are paths to being better at being themselves,” said Flynn, who will be responsible for ensuring the platform users remain at the center of all operations efforts as SilverCloud adds services. “We’re ready to help them with individual programming that’s been proven to change behavior and improve health outcomes, at a scale that enables insurance companies, health systems and employers to empower this proactive self care and chronic disease self management.”

SilverCloud’s digital mental health programs were each developed in collaboration with leading academic institutions and are rooted in over 18 years of clinical research. In the last year alone, SilverCloud has also established new multi-year research partnerships with:

  • Boston University
  • Columbia University
  • Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz, Mexico
  • University of Michigan
  • University of West Virginia

This in addition to ongoing research partnerships across the world, with leading companies such as Microsoft, top academic institutions such as Harvard University, and national health care systems such as the NHS in England and HSE in Ireland.

These collaborative efforts to build effective programs are having a massive impact: 85% of users show measurable improvement in depression and anxiety symptoms, and 56% with clinical diagnosis of depression or anxiety were diagnosis-free at 3 months – at one-third the cost of face-to-face treatment.

“Mental health, like all health specialties, must be carefully addressed with scientific rigor. Programs add value only if there are measurements of progress against recognized mental health metrics,” said Sockel, who will be responsible for helping clients identify and implement the programs most likely to measurably impact their own populations. “We know online cognitive behavioral therapy is effective. We know what helps a new user stick with a program, and we know how they perform over time. That measurable impact is what drives us to keep expanding access.”

Despite growth, access to telemental health care remains a challenge worldwide: In a study of 1,288 U.S. employers, SilverCloud Health found that many employees are struggling with reduced productivity due to stress, anxiety, depression in the workplace, and fatigue and are looking to employers for support with mental health benefits via employee assistance programs.

“As we roll back into return-to-work scenarios, we’re expecting to see the landscape shift and needs evolve,” said Ken Cahill, SilverCloud CEO. “We’re glad to have David and Patrick on board to help our customers empower users to get the support they need to be their best selves.”
