SilverCloud Health supports mental health awareness through sports campaign

January 13 2020, London SilverCloud Health is supporting the recent mental health awareness campaign, driven by the Football Association through its upcoming matchday sponsorship of Derby County’s next home game against Hull City on Saturday 18th January.

Despite one in four people experiencing mental health problems, there is still a stigma associated with talking about mental health issues, particularly in men. Many high-profile sportspeople, such as Robert Enke, Frank Bruno and, Marcus Trescothick have broken down the barriers and shared their own experiences. Whilst there is a very strong link between increased physical activity and positive mental wellbeing, the added pressures on competitive sportspeople and the stress of maintaining a public persona can lead to an increased likelihood of mental health issues.

With this being such an important focus, Derby County has previously hosted a charity match in support of Mind, the mental health charity and recently The Football Association drew attention to mental health through starting all the Third Round FA Cup ties one minute later than scheduled.

Often people do not feel able to speak about the challenges they are experiencing and do not know where to go for help, as highlighted by a recent study by Anxiety UK that found over 57% of its members were unaware of local treatment options on the NHS. Yet, effective treatment, for example, digital therapy such as SilverCloud, is quickly available via your GP and local Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) provider. Once your doctor is aware, they can refer you to a local provider on the NHS, such as Insight or Trent Psychological Therapies Service (Trent PTS) that deliver support across Derby.

Increasing awareness and the empowering people to seek help is crucial, Dr. Lloyd Humphreys, Head of Europe at SilverCloud said:

“We hope that the home crowd of Derby County will provide their voice and support this important awareness campaign. Mental health can affect anyone at any time, and it is essential to remove the stigma and empower people to talk about their experiences and seek help at the earliest opportunity. We are delighted to be the matchday sponsor for this home game and hope that this highlights that digital therapy is easily and quickly available within the county.”

Ben Krysiak, Business Director from Trent PTS said:

"Raising awareness of mental health issues and reducing the stigma surrounding conversations about our mental health is key to improving mental health in all communities. We are proud to offer effective treatments across Derbyshire through a range of treatments tailored to the needs of each individual. SilverCloud has been a great asset to our service delivery due to ease of access and the flexibility it offers clients."

SilverCloud provides online access via your smartphone or any internet-enabled device to over 30 plus programs and allows a person to work through their therapy in their own time and their own pace, supported by their local NHS service. SilverCloud is used by over 80% of the NHS and has recovery rates of 65%, having supported more than 325,000 people across 250 organisations.
