After experiencing the traumatic loss of my baby, I suffered from perinatal anxiety while pregnant with my second child

(Source: https://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/) Thankfully, and rightfully, postnatal anxiety and postnatal depression are now much more spoken about, and understood, in the public sphere. That's not to say that there isn't more work to be done in working out how best to spot, and then support, either of these conditions in new parents, but if you asked people on the street, we imagine that most of them would understand what is meant by these phrases and perhaps even how they might manifest.

But what about perinatal anxiety, referring to the onset of anxiety while pregnant, rather than after giving birth, how many people really understand this much-lesser discussed condition? While some anxiety at this time is normal, around 20 per cent of women may experience perinatal anxiety during their pregnancy through to the first year after giving birth, and yet understanding how to spot the signs of the condition and then figuring out how best to help those struggling still feels like a bit of an enigma.
